About Mariana

Mariana, the Bride

Born in Caracas, Venezuela, Mariana spent her early years in various countries, including Switzerland, Colombia and Mexico, as her family traveled extensively. Her family often took long road trips, even driving from Colombia to Ecuador on one occasion. Mariana would also go hiking a lot, as her mother, being a true Swiss, encouraged her early on.

Mariana became very interested in science in high school. She enjoyed her Chemistry and Biology classes, especially the experiments. After finishing her high school education in Venezuela, she made a decision to attend Brown University in Providence, Rhode Island, to study science. In 1999, Mariana graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree in Biology.

After graduating, Mariana worked at DuPont Pharmaceutical for a year. She found her job satisfying; however, she also found herself desiring to further her studies. In May of 2001, Mariana made a decision to pursue a Ph.D. degree in Molecular Biology, at Baylor College of Medicine in Houston. Mariana’s research focuses on the conformational changes of membrane proteins, and her work was recently published in the Journal of Biological Chemistry. She is expected to complete her program in the next few years.

Mariana has one younger brother, Martin, who is currently living in Washington, D.C., and Mariana’s parents, Hans and Elena, now live in Costa Rica. Mariana also enjoys spending her spare time reading fiction, shopping, traveling, exercising, playing violin and baking.
