Like Mariana, Roy also had opportunities to live in a number of countries. Born in Seoul, Korea, Roy was encouraged to learn many things in his early years, including painting, skating, swimming, public speaking, computer programming, speed reading, martial arts and music, to mention a few - he also modeled briefly as a child. And by the time he was seven, playing violin had become his focus. Roy’s family decided to move to Canada when he was fourteen, mainly to further his violin study. And in the next few years, Roy would become quite proficient in his playing, and he was allowed to join the Toronto Symphony Youth Orchestra. In his high school years, however, Roy discovered his new interests, and later he went to University of Waterloo to study computers as well as science. He graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree in Honours Biochemistry w/Biotechnology Option programme. After graduating, Roy worked at a number of computer companies in Toronto for a few years. And in April of 2001, Roy made a decision to move to Houston for a new opportunity at the Lexicon Genetics Inc., a biotechnology company. Today, Roy continues to work there as a bioinformatics data analyst, helping scientists to decipher information associated with human and mouse genome. Roy has a younger sister Clara, who lives in New York City, and his parents, Joseph and Maria, live in Vancouver, British Columbia. Roy enjoys spending his spare time reading new developments in science and technology, shopping and cooking. |
